Dermal Filler FAQs: Everything You Need to Know Before Treatment
Dermal filler is one of the most effective ways to restore lost volume, enhance facial features, and create a refreshed, natural appearance. While filler has become increasingly popular, it's also surrounded by a lot of misconceptions.
Here are the answers to some of the most common questions I receive about dermal filler.
What is dermal filler?
Dermal filler is used to restore volume beneath the skin.
Most fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a substance that naturally occurs in the body. As we age, we gradually lose collagen, fat, and hyaluronic acid, which can lead to hollow areas, sagging, and a loss of facial definition.
Filler can be used to restore that lost volume, soften folds, enhance facial contours, and create a more youthful, balanced appearance.
How much filler will I need?
This is one of the most common questions I hear, and the answer is that it varies significantly from person to person.
The amount of filler you need depends on several factors, including:
Your facial anatomy
Your age
The amount of volume loss you've experienced
Your aesthetic goals
During your consultation, your injector will evaluate your face and recommend the amount that's appropriate for you.
How long does filler last?
While every person metabolizes filler differently, most hyaluronic acid fillers last between 1 and 3 years, depending on the product used and the area treated.
Will filler make me look fake?
No, not when it's done correctly.
The goal of modern filler is not to make you look overfilled or unnatural. A skilled injector uses filler to restore what has been lost and enhance your natural features while maintaining facial balance.
My philosophy is that people should notice you look refreshed and well-rested, not immediately assume you've had filler. My approach is restoration not necessarily augmentation.
Does filler hurt?
Filler is performed using a very small needle or cannula, so you'll feel a few quick pokes during treatment.
Most patients describe the procedure as very tolerable. Many fillers also contain lidocaine, a local anesthetic that helps improve comfort during the injection process.
Are there different types of filler?
Yes. There are many different types of hyaluronic acid fillers, and each one is designed for a specific purpose.
Some fillers are softer and work well for delicate areas like the lips, while others are firmer and better suited for building structure in areas such as the cheeks, chin, or jawline.
Different fillers also have different rheology, which refers to how the filler behaves within the tissue. Your injector will choose the product that best fits your anatomy and the area being treated to achieve the most natural result.
Can filler be dissolved?
Yes, if the filler is made from hyaluronic acid.
There is an enzyme called hyaluronidase that can safely dissolve hyaluronic acid filler if needed. This gives both patients and providers an added level of reassurance, knowing adjustments can be made if necessary.
It's important to note that not all fillers are dissolvable, which is one of the reasons I choose to work exclusively with hyaluronic acid fillers.
What is recovery like after filler?
Recovery is usually very manageable.
You may experience:
Mild bruising
Mild to no swelling
Tenderness in the treated area
Most patients return to their normal daily activities right away. Bruising, if it occurs, typically resolves within 2 weeks, although individual healing times vary.
What's the difference between Botox and filler?
Botox and filler are completely different treatments, even though they're often mentioned together.
Botox is a medication that temporarily relaxes muscles responsible for facial wrinkles.
Dermal filler is a gel made primarily from hyaluronic acid that restores lost volume, enhances facial contours, and supports areas that have naturally changed with age.
Many patients actually benefit from combining both treatments because they address different aspects of facial aging.
